As we think of understanding where overall public health or population health and healthcare overlap there seems to be a continuum of how much each contributes to overall health. It is important to remember that social determinants play a major role. However, it is also important to remember that traditional systems of classification by race are misconstrued and that when understanding social groups "personalized measures and markers" should be taken into consideration. Not doing so may create classifications and inefficiencies. For instance, it is well-known that in some ways there is more diversity within one race exists rather than in between races.
For instance, in the continent of Africa, two population groups who are spatially close are genetically more distinct than groups in distant places. This has to with the original migration patterns of early humans out of Africa. Mitochondrial or maternal DNA many times can be followed to solely follow maternal inheritance patterns.
However, new systems of classification through precision medicine and risk prediction can allow for identification of individuals not just based on traditional patterns but grouping together based on measures from internet of things and wearable devices. Similarly, for those who may have difficulties and to have targeted resources this is being done in medicine and also being tried in the field of education.
