When understanding diagnosis there are many aspects of this critical point that people often do not pay attention to.  One specific and important area is understanding stigma.  Once a person has a diagnosis, societally and for the purposes of insurance there is labeling.  The diagnosis, once provided, may even factor into pre-existing conditions.
Therefore, there is more of a drive to use people-first language in scholarly research.  However, mental health diagnoses are the most heavily stigmatized.  However, there is a model through which stigma could be better understood.  This layering system is something that applies Bonfrenbrenner's original SEM and applies it to stigma research.
